A purple background with black and white swirls across the image. The text reads: 'Utopia Scratch Night. Theatre of Dissent. July 02.'

Our first Utopia Scratch Night took place on November 7th 2023 at Walthamstow Trades Hall, and we’re happy to announce that our second will be coming back on July 2nd!

Utopia Scratch Night is a work-in-progress theatre event, where artists are given up to 15 minutes to share their piece in front of an audience, often for the first time. We are primarily concerned with starting theatrical conversations around political engagement, and hope for the event to facilitate artistic relationships and connections. We encourage audience members to feed back (where appropriate) to artists about their work. Utopia Scratch Night is weird, curious, imperfect, and radical!

Submissions:

Submissions for July’s scratch night are now closed. Huge thanks to everyone who submitted!

The Venue:

Walthamstow Trades Hall is a member’s club located at 61/63 Tower Hamlets Road, London, E17 4RQ.

It is wheelchair accessible and features accessible and gender neutral toilets and infant changing facilities.

You can find pictures of the venue here: https://walthamstowtradeshall.com/hire

The Trades Hall is 10 minutes’ walk from Walthamstow Central Station (London Overground and Victoria Line) and the main bus station. Buses that stop very close to the Trades Hall on Hoe Street are the 34, 97, 275, and 357. The 123 bus stop is around the corner on Forest Road.

The venue will have an open bar so is not a sober space. We will ask audience members and artists to covid test before the event and masking will be encouraged and offered on the door (but is not required).

Income info:

Tickets will be tiered pricing £5/£8/£12. All profits will be distributed evenly across the projects.

At our last event, we had 50 audience members and each project received £39.77.

With the introduction of our solidarity pricing (£12), accepting slightly less projects and increasing our audience numbers, we hope we can build on this figure.

Peek at our first event below:

A photo of a woman onstage holding a pole above her head and a script in one hand. She is mid-speech.
A person standing onstage in a leopard print jacket, they have an open mouth and hands held in front of them as though they are explaining something to the audience.
An image of two women onstage standing on chairs, one person is laughing and the other is posing mid-speech.
On the left of the photo, two people stand on stage washing rice together. On the right, someone holds a script sitting behind a camera.
